Geography Vision

The vision for Geography at Elizabeth Selby Infant School is to cultivate a love for the locality, the environment and the world within every child.   We aim to equip children with the skills, knowledge and confidence to be independent and take the next step in their learning journey.

Geography at Elizabeth Selby Infant School allows children to develop knowledge about the world, the United Kingdom and their locality.   We aim to equip each child with the skills, knowledge and confidence to be independent and take the next step in their learning journey.

At Elizabeth Selby, we follow the National curriculum subject content.  We provide a high-quality geography curriculum where children develop their location and place knowledge.  They will secure their understanding of human and physical geography and enhance their fieldwork skills.

Children are taught basic subject-specific vocabulary relating to human and physical geography and begin to use geographical skills, including first-hand observation, to enhance their locational awareness. They learn to name and locate the world’s continents and oceans, name countries and capital cities of the United Kingdom and its surrounding.  They learn to compare geographical similarities and differences through studying the human and physical geography of a small area of the United Kingdom, and of a small area in a contrasting non-European country.

Geography is taught as a topic focus for the term and it is integrated into other areas of the curriculum, such as reading, writing and maths. Basic skills are taught throughout the year through cross curricular work.  Children’s work is displayed and updated to enhance the learning and to provide a rich language environment throughout the school.
