Art/Design Technology

At our infant school, Art and Design Technology are recognised as fundamental to fostering creativity, imagination and self-expression. Our inclusive curriculum provides opportunities for pupils to explore ideas, experiment with a range of materials and develop confidence in their creative abilities. Pupils engage in drawing, painting, designing, making and evaluating, enabling them to think critically, solve problems and take pride in their work. Through the study of artists, designers and craftspeople from diverse cultures, pupils develop cultural awareness and an appreciation of creativity in its many forms. We aim to develop confident, curious and imaginative learners who demonstrate enthusiasm, resilience and independence when responding to creative challenges.

Aims:

  • To implement a carefully sequenced curriculum that enables pupils to develop and apply knowledge, skills and understanding progressively.
  • To ensure pupils are taught to use a range of materials, tools and techniques with increasing accuracy, control and independence.
  • To develop pupils’ ability to generate, develop and communicate ideas through drawing, designing, making and evaluating.
  • To equip pupils with subject-specific vocabulary to describe, analyse and evaluate their work and the work of others.
  • To provide opportunities for pupils to study and respond to a diverse range of artists, designers and craftspeople.
  • To enable pupils to evaluate, refine and improve their work through reflective and purposeful practice.
  • To develop resilience, independence and problem-solving through creative and design-based tasks.

In the Early Years Foundation Stage, Art and Design Technology is taught through play-based and exploratory experiences that develop children’s creativity, imagination and early expressive skills. Provision is planned in line with the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework (Expressive Arts and Design) and includes both continuous provision and adult-led activities.

Key learning experiences include:

  • Exploring colour, texture, shape and form through drawing, painting and collage
  • Developing early mark-making and drawing skills
  • Using malleable materials such as playdough and clay to build and model
  • Constructing and designing using a range of resources
  • Exploring joining, cutting and assembling materials safely
  • Engaging in imaginative and role play to support creative thinking
  • Talking about and sharing their own creative work

Links to the Early Years Framework:

Children are supported to safely explore a range of materials and techniques, express their ideas creatively, and begin to talk about their work and the work of others.

Through these experiences, children develop confidence, curiosity and a strong foundation for Art and Design Technology in Key Stage 1.
