Forest School

At Elizabeth Selby Infants’ School, Forest School provides children with opportunities to learn and develop through regular outdoor experiences in a natural environment. We believe that children learn best through practical, hands-on experiences which encourage curiosity, exploration and independence.

Forest School supports children to develop confidence, resilience and self-esteem while building a connection with the natural world. Through child-led learning and carefully planned activities, children are encouraged to take supported risks, solve problems and work collaboratively with others.

Through Forest School, we aim for children to:

  • Develop confidence and self-esteem through outdoor learning experiences.
  • Build independence and resilience when exploring and trying new activities.
  • Learn to work cooperatively and communicate effectively with others.
  • Develop an understanding of the natural environment and how to care for it.
  • Explore and investigate using their senses and natural curiosity.
  • Develop physical skills through outdoor activities and play.
  • Experience learner-led activities which encourage creativity and imagination.
  • Learn how to assess and manage risks safely within the outdoor environment.
  • Enjoy learning outdoors in all seasons and weather conditions.

In EYFS, Forest School provides children with opportunities to learn through exploration, play and first-hand experiences outdoors. Sessions encourage children to develop confidence, independence and curiosity while engaging in practical outdoor activities.

Children are supported to:

  • Explore the natural environment
  • Investigate natural materials
  • Develop physical skills through climbing, balancing and movement
  • Build relationships and work collaboratively with others
  • Develop communication and language through discussion and shared experiences
  • Use imagination and creativity during outdoor play

Forest School supports learning across the Early Years Foundation Stage, particularly within:

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development
  • Understanding the World

Children are encouraged to become active learners who are confident to explore, investigate and engage with the world around them through meaningful outdoor experiences.
