Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education

At Elizabeth Selby Infant School, we believe PSHE is at the heart of children’s personal development and wellbeing. Through our PSHE curriculum, we aim to support children to become confident, respectful, resilient and caring individuals who are able to build positive relationships, understand their emotions and make safe and healthy choices.

Using the Jigsaw PSHE scheme, we provide children with the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to thrive both in school and in the wider world. We encourage children to value themselves and others, celebrate diversity and develop the confidence to contribute positively to their community and society.

  • To provide a progressive PSHE curriculum through the Jigsaw scheme of work.

In EYFS, PSHE is primarily taught through the Early Years Foundation Stage area of learning “Personal, Social and Emotional Development.” Children are supported to build positive relationships, develop self-confidence and learn how to understand and manage their feelings and behaviour.

Children learn through play, daily routines, stories, circle times and practical experiences. They are encouraged to share, take turns, cooperate with others and develop friendships. Adults carefully support children in recognising emotions, solving problems and developing resilience and independence.

Through the Jigsaw approach and wider classroom experiences, children begin to understand how to keep themselves healthy and safe, respect others and develop confidence in their own abilities. Activities help children to build communication skills, empathy and an understanding of classroom expectations and routines.

Children also learn through wider opportunities including assemblies, community projects, visits, role play and discussions. Our nurturing environment supports children to feel valued, included and confident as learners.

Wider PSHE Opportunities

At Elizabeth Selby Infant School, PSHE extends beyond dedicated lessons and is embedded throughout school life. Children develop their understanding of relationships, wellbeing and citizenship through assemblies, class discussions, visits, themed events and community partnerships.

We promote a strong culture of emotional wellbeing through approaches such as Zones of Regulation and Growth Mindset language, helping children to recognise emotions, build resilience and develop positive attitudes towards learning.

Children also benefit from opportunities to engage with the wider community through local projects, visitors and partnerships, helping them to develop empathy, responsibility and an understanding of the world around them.
