Physical Education

Vision

At Elizabeth Selby Infant School, we believe Physical Education plays a vital role in supporting children’s physical, social and emotional development. We aim to inspire all children to enjoy being active, develop confidence in their physical abilities and build healthy habits for life. Through a wide range of fun, inclusive and engaging sporting opportunities, we encourage children to develop resilience, teamwork, leadership and a positive attitude towards physical activity.

  • To develop children’s fundamental movement skills, coordination and physical confidence.
  • To promote healthy lifestyles, including the importance of exercise and healthy choices.
  • To encourage teamwork, cooperation, resilience and good sportsmanship.
  • To provide opportunities for children to participate in competitive sport both within school and in the local community.
  • To ensure PE lessons are enjoyable, inclusive and accessible for all children.
  • To develop leadership skills through games, activities and sporting responsibilities.
  • To encourage children to develop a lifelong enjoyment of sport and physical activity.

EYFS

In EYFS, Physical Development is one of the prime areas of learning within the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework. Children are provided with daily opportunities to develop both their gross motor and fine motor skills through indoor and outdoor provision.

Children take part in a wide range of activities including climbing, balancing, running, dancing, ball skills, obstacle courses and parachute games. They are encouraged to develop coordination, control, spatial awareness and confidence in movement. Fine motor activities such as threading, mark making, playdough, cutting and construction activities help to strengthen hand muscles and support early writing development.

Physical activity is embedded throughout the day through active learning, outdoor play and structured PE sessions. Staff support children to develop independence, confidence, turn taking and cooperation through physical play and games.
